The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to fighting suicide by raising awareness, educating communities, advocating for a change in public policies, and supporting those who have lost loved ones.
In their three-year strategic plan, AFSP says that they hope to reduce the national suicide rate by 20% by 2025.
While suicide takes more lives in a year than war, murder, and natural disasters combined, suicide prevention programs don’t receive nearly as much funding. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention relies on fundraising from donors and volunteers to make a difference.
Out of the Darkness Community Walks
The Out of the Darkness Walk is a movement held throughout cities across the United States. Created by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, these community walks aim to change the stigma surrounding mental health, while also offering support systems to those who are struggling. As stated on the AFSP website, the mission has always been to “Save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide”.
HNM Systems’ Participation
HNM Systems is excited to participate in the San Diego Out of the Darkness Walk! We are so honored to support such a meaningful organization and hope that we can help shed light on the conversation surrounding mental health and suicide. While COVID-19 has impacted our original plans to walk with our community, on October 24th, we will still be walking as a team from our offices in Solana Beach up to Escondido and back.
